Foxtail Jewelry is one of our newest and most adored accessory lines at Graffiti Beach. When we discovered the cosmic work of Betsy Yates from Portland Oregon, we couldn't help but to be completely amazed. And when I say 'cosmic' once you explore her line, you will see what I mean. Think semiprecious stones that sparkle like stars, crescent moons, gyroscopes and matte gold geometric shapes galore! Check out our exclusive interview with Betsy below! Foxtail Jewelry is available in our store: Graffiti Beach 2220 Fern St., San Diego Ca and online at GraffitiBeach.com
Graffiti Beach: When did you start Foxtail?
Betsy Yates: I graduated art school in 2010 and, rather burned out, I took a breather from the arts and didn't create a thing for a whole year. It was a much needed break, but after a while it dawned on me how desperately I need a creative outlet to be happy. Eager to start making again, I rented a studio space in November 2011 and Foxtail was born not too long after.
GB: Was there something in particular that inspired you to want to make jewelry?
BY: It started when I fell head over heals for metalsmithing-- the saws, the hammers, the flames...I can't get enough. And jewelry is, in my opinion, the ultimate art form for the body. There is something so primal in our attraction to adorn ourselves with gemstones and metals.
GB: I know you also work at a boutique, how does that experience benefit you as a designer?
BY: The benefits are endless-- Being surrounded by other's art is inspiring and makes me think about my own work critically. I have definitely formed some massive crushes on other local jewelry lines, and I like to look to them as role models.
GB: Do you have a favorite piece in your collection?
GB: Where do you get your design inspiration from?
BY: I draw inspiration largely from the materials I surround myself with. You should see my studio-- it's filled to the brim with gemstones, beads, and metals waiting to be made into something new.
GB: If you were to give advice to an up-and-coming jewelry designer, what is a tip you wish you got when you were just starting up?
BY: Making the jewelry is only half the battle-- The second half is packaging, pricing, promoting, and ultimately SELLING your work, which can be as time consuming as creating it...
GB: Do you see Foxtail as becoming your full time career someday?
BY: Definitely! I'm just about there, actually, and am excited to see where Foxtail takes me in the next 12 months. I have some exciting plans brewing... lots of traveling and expanding the Foxtail breadth to come. Well Betsy...we look forward to your expansion and love your line! Keep up the dreamy work and we can't wait for more to come!
