Meeting with The Desert Foxx blogger, Heidi, felt like meeting with an old friend. Absolutely sweet and friendly, she took an interest in everything - including photographer Richie Edquid’s equipment! This comes to no surprise as Heidi is a visualist. She is a Visual Arts and Film major and her blog is currently host to her many eclectic outfits. Heidi brought her amazing sense of style with her to Graffiti Beach as she joined us for a frolic around South Park, San Diego. With her unique eye, the shoot found us in some wonderful spots around the neighborhood - we’re so glad Heidi was down for an adventure!

Graffiti Beach: How would you describe your fashion sense?

Heidi Kuan: I would describe it as 'all over the place', as having mood-swings. Not in terms of the outfit itself but more along the lines of that I can't adhere to a certain 'style' or 'look'; some days I like to dress up in chiffon blouses and other days I like to wear baggy shirts and cargo jackets.

GB: Did you go through any horrible fashion phases? Would you ever wear it again?

HK: Yes, there have been too many to recall, but when I was about thirteen I was going through that typical teenage-angst phase where I would try to dress like Avril Lavigne when she first appeared on MTV - but more desperate. I would wear only black and I thought I was cool. But then again, I wear a lot of black nowadays as well.

GB: As a visual arts/film major, do you find that film influences your sense of style or vice versa (as in your fashion sense influences your film projects)?

HK: I think it goes both ways, but I would say that film definitely influences my sense of style more than my fashion sense influences my projects. Whenever I see a film whose characters I'm particularly compelled and intrigued by, I tend to subconsciously channel that character's wardrobe when I decide what to wear or when I go shopping. I would be in a store and think 'Oh, that would be something X would wear', but then I tell myself X doesn't even exist. After watching 'Requiem for a Dream' for the first time many years ago, I was obsessed with Jennifer Connelly's character (to a certain extent) and would only wear a shade of dark metallic blue nail polish that she wore throughout the film. Quite trivial, I know.

GB: Other than film and your fashion sense, do you dabble in any other forms of visual arts?

HK: I play around with photography here and there, but mostly film - there is something about a moving image that I find fascinating. Sometimes I do illustrations and fashion sketches, but haven't had the time nor patience lately. But I... Instagram (@XHighdee)

GB: Why The Desert Foxx? How did you come up with your blog name?

HK: I was well aware of the fact that Erin Rommel's nickname was 'The Desert Fox', which was a perfect 'cover' because I did not want my blog to appear on the first pages when someone would Google my blog name, because for a long time I didn't want anyone to know about my blog. But the name itself...I would say that out of all places on earth, I feel most at ease and at home in the desert, and desert foxes are these amazing and nocturnal creatures. I guess I just wanted something that had nothing to do with fashion. The double xx's at the end simply appeared when I had to purchase my domain name and nothing else was available.

GB: Of all the outfits that you tried on at Graffiti Beach, which did you like most? Which piece did you like most?

HK: The one with the crochet top and skirt! I loved the delicate nature of the crochet top and the long skirt. The headdress was my favorite which you can probably tell because I wore it in all the looks...oops!
